De todas as protagonistas do ressurgimento da folk nos últimos dez anos, a americana Meg Baird é mais profícua e consistente. Com Greg Weeks, fundou os Espers (nome incontornável para a compreensão desse ressurgimento) e tem desde 2006 construído uma obra que concilia o respeito pelas formas clássicas da folk inglesa e americana com uma certa aura contemporânea. Reconhece-se sem dificuldades uma sonoridade (nos acordes das guitarras, na voz, no tempo das canções), ou a presença de certos fantasmas (Nick Drake, Trees, Fairport Convention), mas o pastoralismo desapareceu. No seu lugar, encontramos agora uma música centrada nos seus espaços, respirações, silêncios. Para lá de referências. Um género (associado a um espaço e tempo), agora feito linguagem.

O principal instrumento de Baird continua a ser a voz, entre as melodias de Vashti Bunyan e a solenidade de Celia Humphris. Tal versatilidade já lhe valeu os convites de Bonny ‘Prince’ Billy, Kurt Vile e recentemente, Sharon Van Etten. Mas uma coisa é ouvi-la ao fundo (como acontece nos discos dos músicos em causa), a outra em primeiro plano, sobre as cordas da guitarra. É essa proeminência que se descobre no último álbum, “Season On Earth”, editado no ano passado pela Drag City: sem estar sozinha (conta com a colaboração da pedal steel-guitar de Marc Orleans), define gentilmente a fluidez dos sons, balança o contraste entre as notas, vigia sem pressa o movimento das canções.

Esta é a sua folk, de uma leveza intensa, que embora enraizada no nosso tempo (escutem “Song For Next Summer), não receie confrontar-se com a história da cultura pop. As palavras que canta em “Friends”, versão do tema da Mark-Almond Band que podia perfeitamente integrar “Milestones” (o filme de Robert Kramer), ou o modo como transfigura “Beatles and The Stones” (outra versão, desta vez dos ingleses House of Love), atestam a ousadia. Que nesta noite merece ser testemunhada e celebrada. JM

Of all the protagonists of the folk revival of the past ten years, American Meg Baird is the one who has flourished and remained consistent. She founded ´Espers´ with Greg Weeks in 2002 bringing together classical forms of English and American folk with some contemporary influences. The chords of the guitars, her voice and the songs are easily recognizable and reminiscent of Nick Drake, Trees and Fairport Convention, but the tranquility has disappeared. In its place, we now find a music centered in its breaths and silences. This genre, once associated with space and time, has now been transformed into a new form of music.

Meg Baird´s vocal style is similar to the melodies of Vashti Bunyan and the solemnity of Celia Humphris and it is this versatility that has earned her invitations from Bonny ‘Prince’ Billy, Kurt Vile and recently, Sharon Van Etten. However, it is one thing to listen to her voice in the background of these records, but another to hear it so prominently, accompanied by the strings of the guitar. The strength of her voice on the last album, ´Season On Earth´, released last year by Drag City, is a collaboration with the pedal steel guitarist Marc Orleans, which gently defines the fluidity of sounds, balancing the contrast between the notes.

This type of folk music has an intense lightness, that while rooted in our time (listen to ´Song For Next Summer´), is not afraid to challenge the history of pop culture. The lyrics she sings in the song ´Friends´ (a version made famous by the band Mark-Almond) could seamlessly integrate with ´Milestones´ (the film by Robert Kramer). How she transforms the song `Beatles and The Stones´ (another cover, this time by British band House of Love) is a testament to her daring. This music deserves to be witnessed tonight and celebrated.
