    Thurston Moore c/ Gabriel Ferrandini & Pedro Sousa | Sunflare

    Nas últimas décadas, e à medida que o rock envelheceu, fomos assistindo a uma progressiva desvalorização dos ‘grupos’. Mesmo quando persistem sob forma de trios ou quartetos, os seus membros rapidamente inventam projectos laterais ou se envolvem em colaborações, diálogos, conversas. Ou, pura e simplesmente suspendem ‘a banda’ e dão largas à sociabilidade musical.
    .
    Por um lado, há a sensação de que a música popular sofreu uma tal atomização, que não vale a pena teimar em formatos ‘clássicos’. Por outro, vivem-se os efeitos da globalização, isto é: em cada porto há um músico com que se combina uma jam, com que se partilha um palco, com que se grava um disco. É tudo uma questão de descobrir afectos e afinidades comuns que, no fim, podem até resultar em relações duradoras.

    Tomemos como exemplos os concertos desta noite. O primeiro reúne o enorme Thurston Moore (guitarra), Gabriel Ferrandini (bateria) e Pedro Sousa (saxofone tenor) e acrescenta mais um capítulo à aventura individual e estética do fundador dos Sonic Youth. Não será um encontro como o que deu origem aos Diskaholics Anonymous ou a discos como ‘Shamballa’. Mas promete ser uma coisa fluida, sem deixar de ser intensa. Imaginem a versatilidade elegante de Gabriel Ferrandini ou a fúria poética Pedro Sousa a responder à ferocidade alimentada por décadas de estrada de Moore. Free-jazz punk. Os instrumentos em slam-dance.

    Também absolutamente irrepetível vai ser o concerto dos Sunflare, o magnífico power-trio que um dia nasceu do encontro entre Guilherme Canhão (na guitarra), Rui Nogueiro (no baixo) e Raphael Soares (na bateria). Logo no primeiro ano, ameaçaram entrar em combustão, tal era o frémito que encharcava as guitarras e bateria. Mas resistiram à precariedade que caracteriza muitos projectos contemporâneos e, com o (des)respeito que é devido à história e tradições do rock, afirmaram-se enquanto grande banda do género.

    O novo disco, ‘Ghetto Blast’ (com edição da americana Batshit Records), é uma maravilha e merece todos os elogios que chegam de bloggers, críticos e músicos internacionais. Os apressados não hesitarão em citar sombras (High Rise, Hawkwind, Comets on Fire) e pouco mais conseguirão acrescentar. Ora, os Sunflare estão para lá de um elenco de influências. Atingiram um estado, uma forma que é só a deles. Pelo modo como transformam a distorção em textura, pela música que fazem que é, de uma só vez, visceral e contemplativa. O disco é grande. O concerto vai ser maior. JM

    In recent years we have seen a gradual decline in the concept of the ‘group’. Nowadays musicians tend to have several collaborations on the go at once, often creating side projects or engaging in dialogues and conversations. Other groups go on hiatius and suspend the band altogether, giving them free reign to pursue their other interests. On one hand there is the feeling that the music has suffered because of this. Others view this change as a beneficial one; the effects of globalisation has created a world for musicans which means they are no longer confined to a specific place and time but can instead share a stage or a recording studio with anyone in the world.  It is all a matter of finding common affections and affinities that, in the end, may even result in long lasting relationships.
    Take for example tonight´s concert which brings together Thurston Moore (guitar), Gabriel Ferrandini (drums) and Pedro Sousa (tenor saxophone) and adds another chapter to the adventure and creativeness of the Sonic Youth founder. This will be a collaboration similar to one that produced´Diskaholics Anonymous´ or  his work on William Hooker´s  ‘Shamballa’. Imagine the elegant versatility of Gabriel Ferrandini and the poetic fury of Pedro Sousa in response to the ferocity of Moore´s work over the past decades. This free-jazz punk promises to be a fluid and intense performance.
    Supporting them tonight will be Portuguese psych band Sunflare, the magnificent power-trio born from an encounter between Guilherme Canhão
    (guitar), Rui Nogueiro (on bass) and Raphael Soares (drums). In the first year, the group threatened to implode, such was the energy they projected from their guitars and drums. They have resisted that temptation and have gone onto assert themselves as band that should be taken seriously.    Their new album, ‘Ghetto Blast’ (released by American label Bat Shit Records), is a marvel and deserves all the accolades bloggers, critics and international musicians have awarded to it. Sunflare has been compared to High Rise, Hawkwind and Comets on Fire but now the band has reached a musical state that i    s uniquely theirs,  transforming their music to create something that is visceral and contemplative. The record is great. The concert will be even better.
